Moment of a lifetime

I haven’t missed a Super Bowl in 15 years. Yes, I’m only 25, I’ve been living abroad for the past 12 years and still, haven’t missed one. This is the peak of American sports, as hundreds of millions of people from the U.S. and all around the globe tune in to watch the Super Bowl, the half-time show (Lady Gaga jumped off the stadium’s roof!!!) and the commercials. Yes, the commercials are a big part of the Super Bowl’s massive ratings.

And while Super Bowl Sunday is all about fun and entertainment, for the players on the field – it’s the moment of a lifetime. All the blood, sweat and tears they gave to reach this moment. A lifetime of dedication, hard work and sacrifice sum up to a 60-minute game. Win or go home. Glory or heartbreak. There is no middle ground.

I can’t even begin to imagine what was going on in their minds. But that won’t stop me from giving my tips on how to handle these once-in-a-lifetime moments…

Cherish the moment

It’s important not to get caught up in the hype, lose yourself in the moment and miss out on the full experience. Your personal highlight could be a championship game, your wedding day or even your graduation, it really doesn’t matter. You’ll know what that moments is. And in these special moments, it’s important not to get over-excited, nervous or let any other emotions take over. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and appreciate the present, the now, your own personal history in the making.

Appreciate the past, look to the future

These life highlights don’t just happen. They are built over time. You don’t wake up one day and run a marathon, or climb a mountain. You work your ass off. You don’t marry a random partner, or find babies at your doorstep. Meeting someone and falling in love is a process. Going through pregnancy, or worse – a pregnant wife, is no light matter. Appreciating the past, the path that it took to get to this moment, and all it entailed, is an important step towards truly enjoying and cherishing the moments of a lifetime.

At least you enjoyed the ride

Sometimes, your special moment, the one you’ve been waiting for all your life, doesn’t go exactly according to plan. Maybe you end up losing that championship game. Maybe you reached the peak of the mountain on a cloudy day. Maybe you trip on stage at your graduation. Maybe it rains at your wedding. Maybe the kid isn’t yours (just kidding). But seriously, lighten up…don’t let the magnitude of overwhelm you. Shit happens. Plans aren’t set in stone. And if things at the top get a little messy, well, at least you enjoyed the ride!
