Raw Food for thought

In recent years, a new trend has conquered the world of diets and healthy eating. Yes, I know, it seems that every couple of years a new diet is introduced as the only way we should live our lives, only to be debunked a few years later. However, it seems as if this new craze is only getting bigger as time passes, and it is here to stay.

This dieting trend is called paleo, or “the caveman diet”, and it consists of basically anything that cavemen, or people from the “paleo” (ancient) time period could eat. In large, this diet contains three major food groups – protein, fruits and vegetables. So exactly what can you eat, what to avoid and how is this beneficial? Here is a short beginners guide to the paleo diet.

What to avoid?
This nutritional approach is tough to live by, mainly because of the vast amount of don’ts on the list. All dairy products – nope. All grains, in every shape or form -goodbye. Processed food and sugars? Absolutely not! Even starches, such as potatoes, are a no-go. And of course, since the cavemen didn’t have alcohol, neither can you! Without the ability to eat bread, pasta, potatoes or even beans, it is tough to fulfil your appetite and the feeling of hunger can be strongly felt during the first couple of days into the new diet.

What’s so good about this diet?
Since this diet is basically telling you, eat almost anything as long as it’s not processed, (that’s not much to eat – today everything is processed!), there are many health benefits. The high protein intake allows for more efficient workouts, stronger muscles and sharper cognitive abilities. Studies have also shown that the paleo diet helps reduce symptoms of allergies and stables blood sugar levels. Also, because of the nature of this strict diet, losing weight and burning fat is another great benefit of going caveman.

Raw is better

Although cooked foods are permitted in the paleo diet, many view raw food as the better, healthier option whenever possible. So why is raw better? The more you heat your food, you destroy its nutrients and enzymes. In effect, cooking healthy food rather than eating it raw is pointless, because all the benefits from the healthy veggies and fruit are lost. This is why, while on this diet, it is important to emphasize eating fruits and veggies, seeds and nuts, and especially emphasize eating raw.

Does it work?
While I’m not a doctor or nutritionist, and it obviously depends on other factors as well, I can tell you first hand that it does! I tried the diet for a couple of months, and it worked wonders for me. I lost weight, gained energy and generally felt a lot better. So while I can’t promise that it’ll work for you, I can say that it has worked for me!

So if you’re thinking about making a change to your menu, go back in time to the age of the cavemen, go raw, go lean, go paleo!
